Siding, Gutters & Carpentry

Three exterior trades for homes in Saugus and across the North Shore. Here's what each one covers — and what good work looks like.

Siding

Installation, replacement and repair — vinyl, clapboard and trim.

Siding is the raincoat on your house. Put up properly, each course laps over the one below it, the panels are hung so they can expand and contract with the seasons, and the edges at windows, doors and corners are flashed and trimmed so water has nowhere to get in.

Put up badly, it shows: wavy lines, gaps at the corners, panels that buckle in summer or rattle in the wind — and moisture getting in behind where you can't see it.

What it covers

  • New siding installation
  • Full or partial siding replacement
  • Repairs to loose, cracked or damaged sections
  • Vinyl and clapboard siding
  • Trim — corners, window and door casings

What good siding work looks like

Weather-tight seams, straight and level courses, even reveals from board to board, and clean, finished edges at every corner and opening.

Gutters

Installation, replacement and repair — gutters and downspouts.

A gutter's job is simple: catch the water coming off the roof and send it somewhere other than your foundation, your basement or your front steps.

When gutters sag, leak at the joints or pitch the wrong way, water spills over the edge instead — staining siding, soaking trim until it rots, and pooling right where you don't want it. A downspout that dumps next to the house only moves the problem a few feet.

What it covers

  • New gutter installation
  • Gutter replacement
  • Gutter repair — leaks, sags and loose hangers
  • Downspouts that carry water away from the house

What good gutter work looks like

A steady pitch toward each downspout, hangers that hold the gutter tight to the house, sealed joints, and downspouts that let water out well clear of the foundation.

Carpentry

The carpentry work around your home's exterior, done right.

Exterior trim takes the weather first — corner boards, window and door casings, and the boards along the roof edge. When paint fails and water gets in, wood starts to rot, and rot spreads if it's left alone.

Good exterior carpentry means cutting out what's gone bad, replacing it with sound material, and fitting the new pieces so they shed water instead of trapping it. It's also the work that makes new siding and gutters look finished.

What it covers

  • Exterior trim — corners, casings and roof-edge boards
  • Repairs to rotted or damaged wood
  • General carpentry around the outside of the house

What good carpentry looks like

Tight joints, square corners, solid fastening, and every piece cut and fitted so water runs off it — not into it.
